TestMyKey started as a weekend tool to debug a flaky mechanical keyboard. It became a free, private, no-nonsense tester used by technicians, gamers and writers around the world.
Our mission
We were tired of two things: keyboard testers that asked for an email before they would test a key, and testers that quietly logged what we typed. Neither is acceptable for a tool you might use to verify a password field or test a keyboard you are about to sell to a stranger.
So we built the tester we wanted: one that opens instantly, works on any device with a browser, processes every keystroke locally, and tells you exactly what is wrong with your keyboard in plain English. No accounts, no analytics on keystrokes, no upsells.
The tester is the heart of TestMyKey, but it is surrounded by guides that explain what the results mean — from sticky keys and chatter to ghosting and NKRO. A diagnosis is only useful if you know what to do with it.

How we build
Four principles guide every decision on this site. They are the reason the tester feels the way it does.
Every keystroke is processed by JavaScript running in your browser tab. Nothing is sent to a server, nothing is logged, nothing is stored. We do not have an account system because we do not need one. You can test passwords, SSH passphrases, and secret shortcuts with zero risk.
Sub-millisecond event handling, no loading spinners, no analytics scripts fighting for the main thread. The tester should react to a key press before you finish lifting your finger. If it ever feels slow, that is a bug.
Every tool on this site lists exactly what it measures and how. We do not hide behind vague claims like 'advanced algorithm' or 'AI-powered diagnosis'. The keyboard tester listens to keyboard events and counts them. That is it.
Next.js, TypeScript, Tailwind and standard browser APIs. No exotic dependencies, no SDKs that phone home, no third-party trackers. The simpler the stack, the longer the tool keeps working.

The team
TestMyKey was founded in 2024 by a small group of keyboard enthusiasts — a software engineer who builds custom boards, a repair technician who has fixed more laptops than they can count, and a writer who types for a living and got tired of replacing keyboards that were not actually broken.
We are not a venture-backed startup and we have no plans to become one. The site is paid for out of pocket and runs on simple, cheap infrastructure. The tester is open about what it does because we have nothing to hide — and because the moment a privacy tool stops being transparent, it stops being trustworthy.
