How to Test Your SteelSeries Keyboard

Open SteelSeries GG → Engine → your keyboard → Actuion Point. Set every key's actuation to 1.5mm (mid-range) before testing — values below 0.4mm cause spurious chatter that looks like a hardware fault in our tester.

If you have an Apex Pro TKL 2023 with OmniPoint 2.0, disable Rapid Trigger before testing — Rapid Trigger resets actuation on key release, which our tester may interpret as multiple presses.

Press the OLED display button (top-right) to confirm the display is responsive — if it stays dark, the display module has failed, which is a separate issue from the keyboard's switches.

Press every key in our tester. For OmniPoint keys, you should see a clean single green flash — any chatter means either the actuation point is set too low (adjust in SteelSeries GG) or the magnet in the keycap has drifted.

Hold 6+ keys at once to verify NKRO. OmniPoint switches do not use a scan matrix, so NKRO is unlimited in theory — if you see dropouts, the USB cable or controller is the bottleneck, not the switches.
Common SteelSeries Issues & Fixes
Magnet drift on OmniPoint switches
Each OmniPoint keycap contains a small neodymium magnet. After 1–2 years, the magnet can shift slightly upward in the keycap housing, throwing off the Hall-effect sensor's calibration. The symptom is a key that actuates without being pressed, or registers multiple times per press. Fix: pull the keycap, press the magnet firmly back into its seat with your thumb, then re-calibrate the actuation point in SteelSeries GG.
OLED display failure
The 0.91-inch OLED in the Apex Pro and Apex 7 has a known failure mode where it goes white, flickers, or stays dark. The display is mounted on a ribbon cable that loosens from vibration over time. Test by pressing the OLED button — if the display is unresponsive but the keyboard works, the ribbon cable is loose. SteelSeries GG can also crash the OLED driver; restart the software first. If neither fix works, RMA — the OLED cannot be user-replaced.
Keycap fading on Apex Pro
SteelSeries ships the Apex Pro with ABS keycaps that fade within 6–12 months of heavy use — the legends turn grey then disappear. This is cosmetic only; the keys still register fine in our tester. The fix is replacing the keycaps with a PBT set — note that OmniPoint keycaps have a magnet inside, so only SteelSeries-brand replacement keycaps (or third-party OmniPoint-compatible sets) work. Standard Cherry MX keycaps will not actuate the switches.
SteelSeries GG not detecting the keyboard
SteelSeries GG has a long-standing bug where it stops detecting the Apex Pro after a Windows update. Try: unplug the keyboard, hold the mute button for 10 seconds to force a USB re-enumeration, then plug it back in. If GG still doesn't see it, fully uninstall GG with the SteelSeries Cleanup Tool, reboot, and reinstall. The keyboard itself works without GG — our tester will confirm key registration even if the software is broken.
